Howdy. Do you want to accomplish something difficult? You have two very simple options go in on 120% of an all out effort or don’t commit at all. The jack of all trades won’t be able to succeed in one specialty because of time limitations. You’ve learned this basic concept back in your High School economics class. Opportunity Cost.
For example, if you want to learn a new language or improve your skills in chess, cut out social media. The opportunity cost of looking at what other people are doing with their own lives is too precious. Let’s say you want to start a blog. This message is intended for my past self. Instead of rolling through with a cheap theme on a WordPress blog, I should’ve used a premium theme on Studiopress.
I recently switched over to my new format for this WordPress blog using the Genesis Framework on Studiopress. The HTML code for the theme is easier to work with, and overall, the blog looks and feels crisper.
Unfortunately, the opportunity cost for taking out the old WordPress blog theme was frustrating. At first, the site kept on breaking down because of the widgets and custom HTML code I installed. My plugins I uploaded were designed for the basic WordPress theme so the design didn’t fit correctly with my new Studiopress theme. I ignored these minor issues but they escalated as time went on. It took about two weeks for the blog to finally crash, and I had to teach myself how to code and format files (boring computer stuff).
The time spent fixing this website should’ve been used to draft up more articles for productivity, motivation, and travel tips. Instead, I was frantically searching for ways to fix code yelling at my laptop screen in the process. Go pro out of the gates and don’t create extra work for yourself. I put the problem on my future self by choosing to use a free theme.
Use my mistake to save yourself time. We all have 24 hours in the day to try and improve ourselves to defeat our competition. Focus on the activities that matter to you, and don’t waste time creating more work for yourself that’ll distract you from your goals.
If you want to get into running, invest into a well-known brand like Hoka, Nike, or Brooks so you don’t injure yourself wearing Under Armour shoes. The time spent recovering from injury will hurt your fitness.
If you know you’ll struggle with a class, find a tutor right in the beginning of the semester so you don’t sacrifice your grades.
If you want to start a blog or website, use a legit WordPress theme and hosting program instead of trying to find a knockoff theme that is “free.”
